Day Three: Contact!
A big update from here in the Hot Zone.
Spoke to two people today in the world outside these infected walls. I had a long conversation with a Jeff, a reporter at The Korean Herald. He asked great questions about what life was like inside. It sounds like the piece they’re running is going to be an ‘experience piece’, i.e.: what it’s like being in quarantine rather than an ‘OMG BREAKING NEWS!!1” type story, which is cool with me as long as it’s not a ‘Quarantine Style Expose” with tips on how to match your mask to your dress, how to accessorize your hazmat suit, or what kind of feces is best for decorating your Government Authorized Containment Cell.
Hopefully that article will come out soon, but with the trifecta of terror sweeping through the Korean Penninsula these last few days (Presidential Suicide, Norks with Nukes, Infected English Instructors) I’m pretty sure we won’t be page one.
Secondly, the US embassy has been contacting us room by room (via phone) and assessing the situation, seeing what our concerns are, and if we’ve been in contact with our family. I’m not surprised that they’ve been told by the Ministry of Health that they can’t visit due to quarantine laws, but I do wish they’d just sack up and send a few people over here because pizza delivery guys and a representative from our school have both been able to bring stuff to the front of the building. None the less, it was really reassuring to at least hear from someone with interest in our well being.
And in other news, the internet seems to be back up on some computers. Conspiracy theorists be damned, it looks like we won’t have to release trained carrier pigeons to keep our Facebooks up to date!
In other news, it was another beautiful Korean summer day outside. We sometimes amuse the government workers by waving and dancing for them like trained monkeys. We might be able to work out some private tutoring thing with them if they come within shouting distance.
